Betsy DeVos: A Lightening Rod Of A Figure

Some people have fallen into the misconception that Betsy DeVos is the kind of person that one might think is rather meek. They believe that she is a shrinking wallflower who will just do as she is told and avoid a battle. A lot of that perception probably comes from people who are using sexist stereotypes that are simply not accurate or helpful in any way. The reality is that those who believe this are missing the whole fact that DeVos is actually someone who has a lot of power and knows how to use it.

Betsy DeVos has been active in politics since her days working through local issues in her hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Back then, her and her husband worked to campaign against a proposed multi-sports complex that the city wanted to build. It was not that the DeVos family could not appreciate that the city was trying to do something constructive, it was just that they believed that the efforts could be much better used towards other projects. They wanted to see money routed towards projects that would produce a return for the city that far outweighed the outcome of the multi-sports complex.

The thing about all of this is that Betsy and Dick DeVos saw that it was possible that Grand Rapids might be headed down the same kind of path that Detroit and other Michigan cities had followed when they built similar complexes. Something that seemed like a good idea at the time did not work out nearly as well as the city planners had hoped. It just turned into a big money pit that the DeVos family did not want to see for their own hometown. They fought hard and won the battle to keep the complex out of Grand Rapids.

Early victories like that helped to fuel the desire to move up in politics for Betsy DeVos. She continued to work to build up her influence and power. She did a pretty great job of this and has managed to land herself in the role of Secretary of Education as a result. She is part of the Trump Administration now and is working hard to make charter schools more common in the United States. This is a huge difference between the way that things are now and how they could have been had someone else been elected.

Betsy DeVos is a divisive character who has made a lot of friends and a lot of enemies in her time as the Secretary of Education. It has been so critical to the future of our country that she is now serving in this role. It has transformed our schools in ways that we may not realize for a long time to come.
