ClassDojo: The New Solution to Classroom Behavior Management

The action of a teacher in his or her classroom has twice the impact on the achievement of the students as do school polices related to staff collegiality, curriculum, assessment, and community involvement. Accordingly, one of the most important roles of a teacher is to manage his or her classroom effectively. It is vital that there is clear balance between a teacher’s actions that reward acceptable behavior in classroom and those that provide consequences for unacceptable behaviors.

In today’s technological world, you don’t have to look too far for some of the tools that can help you achieve such a balance and manage your classroom effectively. One of the top programs that’s currently used by many educationists is the ClassDojo app. Launched in August 2011, the program is currently used by 90 percent of the K-8 schools in the US and more than 180 countries globally.

In its basic form, the program enhances seamless communication between teachers, students, and parents. It allows teachers to share notes, pictures, events, and classroom related information with students and parents.

Using the app is easy and straightforward. Teachers set up classes, and every class has specific or unique avatars assigned to each student. The teacher has the ability to reward points (which are referred to as dojos) for positive or negative behaviors. Points can be awarded to an individual or to multiple/groups of students.

The app comes with a pre-loaded list of behaviors to choose from. A teacher can also create his or her own list of behaviors. Once a feedback is given, the students get them instantaneously through a distinctive sound that’s generated when their respective avatars are clicked. Lastly, the app can be used with virtually all devices—whether it is your laptop, desktop, or Smartphone.
